LYRICS
Reviews:

After the lead track "Feel Like a Man", a Oi-tinged anti-army song, this LP rips into short blasts of blitzkreig hardcore in the spirit of SS Decontrol. That band is the obvious influence here, both in Choke's vocal delivery and in the writing of most of the songs. NFX had their own style, however, and this is certainly as much of a classic as any Boston hardcore LP. The band charges forward with wall-of-noise guitars and Dave's hyper drums and snare-roll fills. At least two songs shift from their lighting-speed assault into slower breakdowns, something more common in NY hardcore. One of these, "Citizens Arrest" is an especially dynamic anthem, breaking out of the verse-chorus-verse formula and also gunning for new speeds. The LP's attack only relents breifly during "Turn Your Back," an SSD-style dirge. Although the band didn't print their lyrics, Choke seems to focus more on typical punk protest songs ("Nightstick Justice," "Nuclear Fear," "Feel Like a Man," etc.) although there are elements of the themes that would dominate his later bands ("Punch in the Face," "Primary Attack").

This band more than any other of the classic Boston bands seems to work on alternating between slow mosh parts and fast thrash (think "Why Be Something that You're Not?" as the concept for a whole band). Choke's vocals are delivered in this over-the-top accent that is kind of hard to take seriously, but this band can seriously rev it up during the fast parts- they are almost as fast as DRI!! The recording does NEGATIVE FX more justice than the SSD and FU's first LPs, which I think lack power, because everything is clear yet raw (although the cymbals are almost as loud as on the first BLASPHEMY album!). For some reason, not all the lyrics are included, but trust me you aren’t missing out on Seamus Heaney here: "Fuck you- go away. Your [sic] gonna die you look so stupid you make me sick. Punch in the face! (4x)." Evidently this band only played five shows but were insanely popular in Boston, as they were able to open up for the MISFITS, BAD BRAINS, and GOVERNMENT ISSUE. I hate to sound like Allmusic here, but this gets by almost entirely on its attitude. But it "gets by" in a serious way that leaves no survivors!!!

This is simply some of the finest Boston HC ever released. Imagine, if you will, the sound of early SSD and DYS, made even more hectic and intense by Choke's screaming, spitting covals, and Dave's clean, lightning-fast rolls on the snare. The guitar seems a bit quiet at first, but somehow works its way to the foreground after repeated listenings. These are intensely personal lyrics, though hard to decipher (still no lyric sheet, Taang!). There are straight-edge songs, war songs (dealt with on a personal level), a couple slow droners and some blazing thrashers, and it's all enjoyable. This is a must for anyone who likes original (recorded in '82) Boston HC. A good buy.
