76% UNCERTAIN

from Problem Child #6, 1986

This interview was sent in by Lee. 76% Uncertain now have a new LP out so why not check it out...

Would you class your music as a cross between CIA and Reflex From Pain, as you were formed from the remnants of these bands? How would you class your music?

Dave: Yes, especially later Reflex, after Todd joined the band as guitarist.
Bill: Plus there are lots of other influences too.
Todd: We're not trying to sound like either one though.
Bones: It's hard to classify our music.
Bill: We'd really rather not classify our music 'cause sometimes it puts limitations to it.
Todd: It's a form of punk rock.

Do all the band work? Is unemployment high in the northeast? What social security system operates in the US?

Dave: The unemployment rate is better in the northeast than it is in the band.
Todd: We're 20% unemployed. As far as the social security system it's extremely inefficient.
Bones: For the amount of money taken in, the amount given back is ridiculous.

Are 76% Uncertain a serious band with serious intentions? Your lyrics are very lengthy and intelligent yet you don't seem politic much. Why? Do the band hold any strong political views?

Bill: Sure we're serious. We like to talk about social issues in day to day life more then political issues though. Politics and politicians are total bullshit. That goes without saying.
Todd: I think old blues musicians should be elected president.
All: laughter

What are your views on alcoholism? Are you straight edge and what do you feel are the good points and bad points of drugs and their addiction?

Dave: It's just like any other form of drug abuse, it's no good.
Kenny: The good points? There are none, that's a stupid question. (oh yes there is, it's a temporary escape from the strains and stresses of everyday life so there!)
Dave: The good points hmmmmm... well, you grovel around for money like a slug, you make yourself totally worthless.
Bill: Yeah, pretty good, huh?

Are there many bands or 'zines located in your area? Do any of the band write 'zines and has there been much interest shown in 76% Uncertain since the LP?

Bones: Quite a few bands but not many 'zines. Just a couple of 'zines. Bill: We don't write 'zines but Bones corresponds with so many he might as well.
Bones: Interest, hmmm... yeah, there is, we got lots of mail from all over the world.
Bill: And we appreciate it.

Were you self taught regarding your instruments, as you seem to be quite proficient musicians? Have 76% Uncertain undergone much change in their music since your band formed in late '83?

Dave: We're all self taught.
Bill: I took a couple of lessons a while back which totally messed me up.
Bones: I took voice lessons in fourth grade.
Kenny: Todd took Hambone lessons.
Todd: Yes, I went up to the mountains into a cave and meditated for 3 days and asked for the powers to do ham bones.
All: Laugh! (ha ha –Leroy)
Bill: Ah, c'mon.
Dave: I think we’ve progressed, we're branching out, not limiting ourselves to what we originally played.
Kenny: Branching out like a mighty oak, eh?
Bill: The only problem is the squirrels looking for acorns.
Bones: All kidding aside, yes, we're progressing, you'll hear that when the new album.
Bill: Also we're a lot more comfortable playing with each other now because of the time passed, now we can kind of anticipate each other more.

Is there any place where UK people can buy your records other than from the band or US distributors?

Bones: Not right now, but we're thinking about licensing it for distribution in Europe, that way it will be much cheaper over there, right now it has to be bought as an import and that's a lot of money to spend, no good.

Is there anything else you'd like to say to all the people in the UK reading this?

Bones: Just hello, and if you have already bought the records, thank you.
Bill: And thanks for the interview Lee, it was great!
