Schmitt -
Flutes (Germany)
April 30th - May 7th, 2001
Beate Gabriella Schmitt (b. Berlin, 1949) studied music (flute)
and music sociology in Berlin and Hamburg, graduating in 1972
and taking a peerformer's degree in 1974. She maintains an international
concert career with a solo and chambere music repertoire encompassing
the Baroque and Romantic periods and, especially, contemporary
music. She has developed new methods of attack and has worked
experimentally with composers and actors in the creation of works
and projects, playing a very large number of world premieres and
making diverse gramophone and CD recordings. She has held workshops
and flute classes in Germany, Seoul, Manila, Jacarta, Hong Kong
and Taipei, among other places, and headed the flute department
at the Berlin Hochschulle der Kunste from 1991 to 1996. In November
1994 she toured Asia with her own ensemble of fifteen flutists
from the Berlin Hochschulle, giving premieres in Seoul and Hong
Kong of works dedicated to the group. Since 1982 she has worked
with the Electronic Music Studio of Berlin Technical University.
In 1996 she began an intensive study of the combination of flute
and computer technology; the educational aspects of her findings
has been presented in her first course on "Flute and Computer
in Instruction". She lives in Berlin.
