Spoken and Written Language Lab
Spoken and Written Language Lab
Welcome to the Spoken and Written Language Lab in the Department of Communicative Sciences and Disorders, directed by Dr, Adam Buchwald.
Our research explores the cognitive and neural processes that underlie speech production and perception, as well as the production of written language. Most research in the lab examines the performance of individuals with acquired speech and language impairment (e.g., aphasia, apraxia of speech, dysgraphia) to gain a deeper understanding of both normal cognitive processing as well as the behavioral manifestation of impairment to the cognitive and neural processing systems subsequent to brain damage. In each domain, the research in the lab is at the intersection of theoretical and applied interests, and we are particularly interested in “interface” issues, including:
-- the relationship between grammar, phonological processing, and motor planning
-- the relationship between speech production and speech perception
-- the relationship between orthographic processing and phonological processing
-- the relationship between impaired language processing and unimpaired processing
