Summary

Production Stills

Japhy and Brendan filmed this music video for Japhy's band: it's day. They filmed 104 shots in six evenings using miniature sets, live-action setups and created all FX without the use of CGI. They filmed with a 60:1 shooting ratio, built various lighting systems and camera support rigs to get the footage for the production. Shot on location in Palo Alto and Stanford University and at Chaos Transfer Studio. Edited and color corrected in Final Cut Pro.

Our camera rig: Canon XL1s with Sony TRV-103 mounted on shoulder mount. Firewire link cable sends a 1:1 copy of video from the Xl1 to the Sony for backup.

A a giant's contact lens was used for liquid effects. We shot upwards filming the swirling liquid from below.

Setup for a huge "warehouse of lights" set which can be seen in the final outre section of the video.

Set for soldiering iron smoking. Lit with an overhead projector and large Xmas lights.

Japhy prepares to plunge his soldiering iron into a glass of cola. The camera was wrapped in plastic to protect it from smoke and spray.

Inside of a Stanford lecture hall Japhy runs stingers for lights amidst the seats. Dual 300W lights glare atop the landing. We placed an overhead projector and 300W tungsten fixture up there to rim/back-light Japhy when he sings in theatre. Intermittent fill was provided by hand operated 2x15W fluorescent units (not pictured). The XL1s stands ready on heavy sticks below with Sony backup unit mounted.

XL1 with Sony backup unit.

An exterior staircase with 300W tungsten unit suspended from stingers above. Japhy walks down these stairs in the middle sequence of the video, which we see shot from above by Brendan.

Bredan prepares the camera.

Brendan's editing workstation. G4 Powerbook with Final Cut Pro and external FireWire800 drives. Genelec 1029a monitors. Apple LCD and Sony CRT with 16:9 mask for framing and color reference.
