My "Brown University" Theory
I have a theory. A rather silly one, but a sound one, I believe.
I don't think Brown University really exists.
Let me explain. All my friends, my perfectly intelligent, able friends, who applied to Brown, have been rejected. Two of my friends (twin brother and sister), one of whom is at Stanford and the other who is at Harvard, were wait-listed. There was no reason why they should not have gotten in; they both had straight-A's, one had a 1600 and the other had a 1590 on the SAT's, and their father works at Brown.
Not only do I know no one who has gotten into Brown, but I don't know anyone who currently attends it. I don't know any famous alumni besides Lisa Loeb and Duncan Sheik, but any college can claim that anyone goes there. Of course, my friends' father works there, but my theory is that this so-called Brown University is really a college admissions pyramid scheme.
You see, college applications are expensive. At $50 - $60 a pop, that's going to cost everyone who applies a pretty penny. Even a small college will get about 1,000 applicants, thereby raking in $50,000 - $60,000 every year. Because of Brown's mystique, and reputation that no one will get in, more than three times that number will apply. My theory is that my friends' father didn't accept work there because of its reputation or good academic program, but because he knew where the money is.
As for the building that they call Brown University? It's either all cardboard, or they use it to house their illegal, nefarious operations.
So, no one gets in, thereby hiding their scheme and increasing their mystique and encouraging more people to apply to test their luck. Each student sends fifty dollars their way, and they make money, and no one is the wiser.
I don't know, just a thought.
