Why?
I'm trying it hard with another CD that features basement recordings of the "golden years" of Bulgarian communism, when people were living in a giant concentration camp and while hundreds of punk bands on the West were selling out and turning to pop music, here in Bulgaria being a punk was a crime against society! As I released DDT CD last year, I have some answers that I want to give to your unasked questions! Just in case you need to know something about these FAQs...
1) Why UZZU and these "basement recordings"?
Why the fuck not? I'm sick of peole who think all punk stuff should sound like "techno" and are too easy to neglect something that is not recorded in a very expensive hi-fi studio. Hey, these were the years... how can you be a punk and go to the local studio to record something while it is a crime against the state? What is more important to you, music or the sound? People ADORE shitty sounding bootlegs of the 138th gig of another popular '80s punk act, but forget to show tolerance to bands that actually had the guts to scream their energy into the face of the system, not recording one album five months just to get the best sound! Hey, and something about these yeears should be preserved...!!!
2) Why CDR?
Why not? Somebody said CDRs are the "demo tapes" of the 21st century, AON will still do tapes and vinyls when we can afford it! But hey, CDRs are equally good and reliable as CDs and I just do no get the "hi-fi" maniacs that do not even try to ask anything after they hear it is a CDR... hey, why not?? Music/ideas are what matters, don't you think it is something interesting that you have to check first and then to frown and say "CDRs suck". I just do not get the "hi-fi" maniacs that won't check tapes or CDRs or even vinyls... as they surely think it is so easy to go to the local supermarket, get some pop music and slip in the armchair so why bore to check something real??? Hey, think about these and if you disagree or wanna ask more questions - you know where to find me: lavrentiiberia@dir.bg
UZZU were one of the most underrated punk bands from the Perestroika years. This CDR will try to give you the idea who were they. I remember seeing them live twice in '91 and '92. This awesome energy and talent really blew me up. Some legend says John Peel took their master tapes (while visiting Bulgaria in the very early '90s) to play them on BBC and he played them once... but the band lost the studio masters! This release features their two demos. Of course, the tape sources show the obvious limitations of the basement sound, but hey... I like it this way! The lyrics deal with various topics - from alcohol to the "fun" of living in People's Republic of Bulgaria. UZZU still exist under one form or another and the last known contact for their vocalist/founder Hristo Panev is: voland@mbox.eda.bg
He was supposed to help me with the CD artwork, but he disappeared somewhere. They never released anything on the time they existed, but later on songs by them appeared on Greetings From Bulgaria compilation tape and Bulgarian Archives compilation 7" (sold out now!).
So, I decided to put some life in theis band... and hey... they surely deserve it!!! This CD is limited to 500 only and it wouldn't have been possible without my label partners and of course, there are other people to greet too here, but the list is too long! They know who they are though!! Thanks to UZZU! Cheers to Mrs. Nathalie Portnoy!
