INDIGESTI
from Ripping Thrash #2, 1986
Indigesti are another hot band from Italy. They play a unique style of thrash: it is fast but melodic too with very complex rhythms, and their songs are well thought out and original. Their LP is excellent - one of the best LPs of '86 so far. Here's the answers to some questions sent to the band.
WHAT IS THE BAND'S CURRENT LINE - UP?
Rudy- voice Enrico - guitar "Puppy" Massimino - drums Silvio - bass
IS "OBSERVATI DALL'INGANO" THE BAND'S FIRST VINYL RELEASE?
No, we've done also a 7 inch 45rpm in 1982, together with Wretched, one side each band, but it is totally sold-out from years. In 1984 San Diego BCT has done a tape called "Sguardo Realta" sold not even in the States.
DO YOU FEEL UNITED WITH OTHER BANDS IN ITALY? IT IS SAID THAT THEY HAVE NOWHERE TO PLAY - HAS THIS BEEN TRUE FOR INDIGESTI TOO? WHEN DO YOU PLAY GIGS? WHERE ARE THEY HELD?
We feel united with bands like Negazione, Impact, CCM, we've played and toured together, we feel them very close, as friends. Unfortunately it is true that there are only a few places to play here in Italy. We, usually, in Italy play in places such as a Youth Centre or small clubs, sometimes in squats, like Virus in Milano, that has opened again yesterday night with Scream (Washington DC), Wretched and Indigesti.
DO YOU TRY TO GET ACROSS A MESSAGE TO YOUR AUDIENCE? ARE A LOT OF THE PUNX IN ITALY BELIEVING IN ANARCHY ETC? OR DO THEY ONLY LIKE THE MUSIC?
We want our audience to understand that Indigesti is a combo made by 4 different guys, and each one thinks with his own head, his own way of acting, being and behaving. We would like that everyone could mean something by himself, out of every kind of crowd, gang, political party. This is a million dollar question. Like all the other places in the world here in Italy there are assholes and egg-heads, preachers and kids; somebody doesn't care about music, somebody else doesn't care about politics.
WOULD YOU SAY YOU ARE INFLUENCED BY ANYONE TO PLAY THE KIND OF MUSIC YOU DO?
Of course we've been listening to music for years, but also a different kind of, from Hard-Core to R'n'R, our preferite bands are Bad Brains, Black Flag, Meat Puppets, Minutemen. Maybe we've got influenced by them.
HAVE MEMBERS OF THE BAND HAD TROUBLE WITH THE POLICE, OR THE BAND AS A WHOLE? THE POLICE SEEM TO BE VERY BRUTAL IN ITALY: DOES THIS MAKE THE PUTTING OF SHOWS ESPECEALLY DIFFICULT?
Two of us have some troubles with cops, but not the band as a whole. Cops are very bad here in Italy, because they come from the poorest and most ignorant classes and places. It is something you can't understand, it is something about Italian way of life, this society makes us sick, this society is a big shit, and police is the mirror of the worst aspects of this society.
THE LYRICS SEEM VERY PERSONAL AND UNIQUE COMPARED TO MOST OF THE PUNK BANDS. WHAT ARE THEY INFLUENCED BY?
Well, this is true. There are a lot of bands who just preach like politicians and if they want to do it, to us is okay, but we don't want to sit down, in silence, listening to their own opinions about vegetarianism, anarchy etc. We don't know the truth (does it exist) we can just talk about ourselves, about what we feel inside. There is a place in the deep of ourselves where there are no differences between right and wrong, truth and lie: we talk about it, we deal with different things.
WHAT'S "DUBBIO LEGATO" ABOUT?
No words to explain. Read it and have your own idea about it.
ARE THERE OTHER BANDS IN VERCELLI?
We don't live in Vercelli, only Enrico lives over there, and there are no bands at all there, but Silvio and Massimo are from Torino, and there are a lot of good bands there: Negazione and Stinky Rats, Silvio used to play in Declino, now split-up.
ARE YOU VEGETARIANS? DO YOU HAVE STRONG VIEWS ABOUT ANARCHY, PEACE, VIVISECTION, RELIGION, AND SO ON?
None of us are vegetarians, and anarchy and peace could be just two words: we don't hide ourselves behind the heaviness of big words like these: we could spend hours talking about it, isn't it? We don't do drugs at all, but we don't call us a straight edge band: DO NOT FOLLOW THE CROWD.
WHAT DOES THE BAND PLAN FOR THE FUTURE?
We're going to leave for the USA tour. If everything turns out well, we'll play the first show in New York City on the 1st of August, and then go to California, playing all through the States, about 30 shows.
MESSAGES?
We've played in Germany, Holland, Denmark, Belgium and France, and of course Italy, and we would like to tour England, too. So get in touch with us.
