THE OPPOSITION PARTY
Opposition Party

Band History and Discography compiled by Boy

In the early 80's, Francis Frightful had enough of the music he was listening to then and decided to form a band and give the local music scene a kick in the arse with "raw fucking punk rock music". An appropriate name was needed to catch people's attention. This is why Opposition Party was chosen to "shock and grab attention" as it was suitable given the way many Singaporeans think. After honing their craft and establishing themselves as a no-frills intense live act, their tight coordination sees them playing at the now-legendary 'No Surrender' gig (which also featured pioneer local bands like The NoNames, Corporate Toil and Zircon Lounge) at Anywhere in 1987. By 1989, OP were stripped to just three men. Francis, who claimed that he is not a guitarist and formerly only handled vocals, switched to playing the guitar. Together with drummer Michael and bassist Evan (who later joined The Padres), OP was emerging from their trademark punk edge (dischord at its very best) into something that could easily make your ears bleed.

After numerous EPs, demos and vinyl, together with members, both old and new having different backgrounds, mixing their love for different kinds of music just conjures a lethal brew which brings a surge of rage into the most calm listeners.

Opposition Party With the release of the limited edition EP cassette Reborn in 1996, OP sort of commemorates 10 good years and re-established their position as Singapore's premier punk rock band. In-between OP played numerous gigs both locally and overseas and then in 1998, they came up with a four song EP to announce their comeback. Though it featured entirely new compositions, OP 1999 was not meant to be a commercial release and so it's a rare collector's item. It comes with EP ver 1.0, a 4+1 song EP. Released in 2000, it consists of new songs found in OP 1999, together with a couple of 'live tracks' and a bonus track called 'Baka Uta'. Sadly, after recording EP ver 1.0, guitarist Danny left OP, only to be replaced by - guess who - Lee, the former guitarist. With this current line-up, OP has once again played many, many local gigs, plus overseas gigs in Malaysia and Thailand. In these 15 years though, nothing much has changed, OP still plays loud music. From a "just whack punk band", to thrash metal, to high-speed, technically complicated songs... you name it, OP most probably has done it. Label all you want about the kind of music they play, this is the least of OP's concerns.
