Hey! Welcome to "How to Cook like a College Student."

"Hotpot"- a style of "cooking" where everything starts out raw and you
cook the various foods yourself in flavored soup.
If you're here, it's probably for two reasons. One:
you're a college student (or fresh out of college) trying to survive;
and Two: you like to experiment with cooking... Great!
Before
we get started... I just want to provide some information about myself.
I'm a sophomore at NYU in the Stern business school. I'm still
undeclared in my major, but I'm leaning towards Marketing,
International Business, and a minor in Psychology.
My hands-on cooking experience is pretty limited, since I only really
started at the end of senior year of high school (in preparation for
the many months ahead that I would be deprived of my mom's cooking).
Hopefully, though, I can make up for what I lack with my many years of
experience working at restaurants and being around cooking. So
conceptually it's not too difficult. Oh, and I'm also Cantonese, so a
lot of my mom's cooking was... well... Chinese. Thus, there may be some
Oriental recipes up here as well (mostly from memory and advice from my
mom).
Now as we know, us college students have a tight budget. But don't
worry, home cooking is one of the most affordable (and delicious,
nutritious, judicious) ways to eat. One can easily spend a minimum
of $10 per meal in any NYC restaurant, and if you're eating three meals
a day like you should, that's $30 bucks a day (!) just on food alone.
That cost could be minimized substantially by allocating funds to
buying groceries and investing in some cookware.
A personal place I like to go to for some 'official' recipes is www.foodnetwork.com. Food Network television is also entertaining and helpful to watch =D. I recommend Giada at Home ;].
