in collaboration with
A unique six-week program is held in collaboration with NYU
Technology Program and the Director of Sound Recordings
of Berlin Philharmonic. Open for undergraduate and graduate
student composers, the program offers the individual young composer
the opportunity to write a new work under one of the following
categories: an instrumental composition of up to seven players;
an interactive electro - acoustic piece; a multimedia project
(using dance, acting, image, as well as electronic media); a mostly
MIDI and electronics work; or a music theater composition. In
addition the students will meet several visiting composers and
performers in lectures, demonstrations and in music performances.
Participant students are exposed also to the NYU
Summer Minifest, which will
bring on stage composers productions, such as the Guild of Composers,
European groups and Composers Concordance productions.
Most importantly, our students' works will be rehearsed, performed
and recorded by a professional ensemble (tentatively consisting
of Fl, Cl, Pno, Tr, Vl, Cello, and Perc.) as part of this Minifest.
Rehearsals and the final concert are recorded and mixed for a
CD production in the final week, by a team of professors and students
from the Temmer Tonmeister Program.
An additional concert may be offered after the final recording
& music production, to facilitate the addition of multimedia,
dance, interactive enhancements or requiring special stage preparation.
Each student will receive 10 copies of the professionally designed
CD, containing all of the works performed and recorded.
In addition to writing, correcting, rehearsing, performing, recording
and editing their personal compositions, students benefit from
visiting composers, performers, choreographers, stage directors,
conductors and recording engineers in master classes, lectures,
or recitals, as well as class discussions on topics related to
students' writing projects.
Student composers are also encouraged to enroll in the Advanced Instrumental
Conducting, which employs the same ensemble in residence.
Besides training the student in the techniques and perception
of Classic, Romantic and Contemporary repertoire, it offers the
training in conducting composers own work written in the Composers
Seminar. It is also a very important class for the film and music
theater composer.
There is a $250 fee, collected for the professional production
and multiplication of the final CD. Each will receive 10 (ten)
CDs containing the entire class music production.
