This page contains over one hundred textures from the Brodatz texture album, a standard set of textures (if a little outdated.) Each row shows three images. The image on the right shows the actual texture. The image on the left shows the texture reduced to a third the width and height, and reenlarged using bicubic interpolation. The image in the center was also reenlarged by the same factor, but using the patch based method described in my thesis. In each case the patches are 8 x 8, and overlap by 3 pixels with the neighboring patches. The training set from which the patches are taken is not shown, but consists of a 430 x 430 image with texture similar (but not identical) to the image on the right of each set.

It does a good job on most of these textures, because the training set comes from the same statistical distribution as the test set. On natural images the advantage over bicubic interpolation is less pronounced.
