Ghostscript, Ghostview and GSview. This lets you view postscript and pdf, create pdf files, and extract text from either postscript or pdf. Don't forget to visit David's web page to learn how to create a pdf file. This also applies to all of you who think they know how to create pdf files but: they look ugly even though they print fine, they are so big they can't fit on your HDD, or your the only one who can read your own files.
If you need to search the web, no search engine is as good as Google. It even scans pdf and postscript documents.
NoteTab. NoteTab Light is a very good free text editor. Although it was designed for writing html, I personally use it also to program in Stata. It has the nice property that it can display and save documents in Unix format.
