Around the world trip - the First Class of all Holidays

The appeal of an around the world trip

The enchantment of an around the world trip for many vacationers is to experience as many different cultures and countries as possible.  For any one who has thought about taking such an elaborate and extended holiday, they would also agree, it is the “First Class” of all holidays.

Such a trip can be planned and carried out in many various ways, but by definition it includes travelling to all 6 continents: Africa, North and South America, Asia, Australia and Europe.

Different types of around the world trips

Only concerning the length of the trip, there are many different ways to enjoy an around the world trip. Arguably the favourite of many is to travel as backpackers, either with one or numerous backpacks along the way.

Backpackers usually have tons of time, at least 12 months, travelling spontaneously with low cost airlines like TuiFly.com, with buses, by train or other forms of inexpensive travel options. To get the cheapest travel option available just go online and check for the lowest fares. They sleep in hostels and campgrounds and wander from place to place as they like.

A little more luxuriously equipped are the 30-somethings.  They often have worked hard for numerous years and are now taking a break from the work world and want to see as much from the world as possible.  The pay for the trip with their savings, sold their stock options or have cashed in their building loan account.  In between two to three months, they use an Around the World ticket from the various airlines such as Lufthansa, United Airlines or Air France.

The third type of World Travels are the “filthy rich”.  They, either through inheritance or success in the business world, must no longer worry about money.  Therefore, they travel very luxuriously- favourite forms of transportation for them are cruises and boat trips.  They go shopping in the most expensive places and enjoy the different foods and the local wines in high-class restaurants. They also prefer flying with first class airlines like Fly Emirates, of course. For this group time is also only a minimal concern.

The biggest mistakes of around the world trips

Below you can read excerpts from first hand reports of world traveller Nils Roemeling in his german speaking travel blog “Weltreise mit den Gnomads”.  The content ranges from deciding on travel destinations, the reasons for taking such a trip, and even some of the greatest mistakes made planning/during an around the world trip. There are a lot of similar travel blogs to be found online.

These are the biggest mistakes one can make on a world around trip:

  1. Planning with too little money
  2. Not willing to look for work during travels
  3. Lack of flexibility in the travel days
  4. Inflexible travel vouchers, for example pre-purchased too many tickets beforehand
  5. Carried too much in backpack
  6. Travelled with too many people
  7. Not willing to wander without a plan
  8. Not willing to assimilate to the customs of the various countries
  9. Did not stay in contact with friends and family at home
  10. Gathered too little information beforehand about the trip

The travel destinations and the experiences are as different as the intentions and the forms of travel.  From a beach trip in the Seychelles, Mauritius or Vietnam, to a Safari in South Africa or Botswana (see cool image above, more here), to a city trip in Cape Town (see image below), Rio de Janeiro or New York - the possibilities are nearly endless.
