Paph. Transvaal 'Orchid Loft' AM/AOS
(chamberlainianum x rothschildianum)
Registered in 1901, Paph. Transvaal is a distinctive and heavily-awarded primary hybrid between the sequentially-flowering chamberlainianum and the incomparable rothschildianum. The former species contributes rich chocolate-brown coloration, while the latter greatly increases flower size and passes on its large striped dorsal. The progeny tend to be semi-successively flowering, and are easy growers with bright indirect light and intermediate temperatures.
The cultivar 'Orchid Loft' was originally awarded a 79-point HCC in 1975, but was "upgraded" to an 82-point AM in 1996 with the judges citing improvement in flower size and pouch coloration.
