Phrag. Sedenii (#1)
(longifolium x schlimii)
One of the oldest phragmipedium hybrids, Phrag. Sedenii was registered by Veitch in 1873. That it remains so common in
cultivation today is both a testament to its inherent beauty and to the stagnant state of phrag hybridization in the
pre-besseae era. Phrag. Sedenii is an exceptionally vigorous grower, putting out multiple leads from each growth and
quickly reaching specimen size. As with most phrags, Sedenii is a successive-bloomer, and spikes on mature plants will
readily branch. Phrags as a rule also tend to drop the old flowers while they still look fresh, and there is a way to
temporarily preserve their integrity by placing them in a clear plastic bag containing a slightly-damp paper towel. In this
manner, the flowers can last up to a week or more in pristine condition.
