Pre-Visualization Tool
2003

Description

Interactive 3D application designed for a museum exhibition that reproduces the experience of a real film director when planning out a scene using a "Pre-viz" tool. Create a 30 seconds scene by adjusting camera angles, camera movements and build your own sequence of shots.

Audience

Museum visitors interested in new trends of digital filmmaking

Technology

The application exploits the power of Shockwave 3D in providing a three dimensional navigable space. This technology allows the manipulation of a virtual camera just like in the real world: zooming in and out, making camera movements such as panning, tilting, and crane. The ultimate goal of the application is to provide a high level of accuracy in simulating real world film shots, an ability that gives amazing advantages to a director when planning out complex scenes in a feature film.

Case Study

The theoretical foundation for the production of this project was obtained by using the feature film "Panic Room" as a case study. Even though this was not the first production to take advantage of this technique, its innovation lies on the fact that it was the first work in which the actual 3D model designed for the pre-viz tool becomes the final design for the set in which the movie was shot. Also, it is the first time in which the pre-viz technique is used to pre-shoot up to two thirds of the film, as opposed to other productions in which this process has been used to plan out only scenes that involve special effects.
