PROTOTYPE FOR INTERACTIVE GAME BASED ON MECHANICAL ARM WITH FAN

For the final project I decided to improve my midterm project, the mechanical arm. The main challenge was to get the 2 servo motors to work smoothly, to reinforce the arm to make it strong so it could resist a more powerful motion and to solve the power issues.

The original concept also evolved as I decided to design another module that could be attached to the arm in order to create an interactive game. Thanks to the feedback I received in class, I thought about using a methaphore based on a science fiction movie, such as "Event Horizon" or "Lost in Space". Therefore the goal of the game is to "awake" an abandoned spaceship using the mechanical arm. Once three conditions are met, the ship's engine (a fan) will turn on.

The next step will be to fine tune the funcions of the game module, in order to present it at the rotating show that will take place next semester on the ITP floor.

MID TERM PROJECT
10/29/01

MECHANICAL ARM WITH FAN

My main goal when designing the mid term project was to apply several principles that I learned in the class. The most interesting one for me was to create motion using servo motors. I also liked the idea of "energy transfer", that is to create different effects when playing with air (wind generated by a fan) and ligth.

The main challenge was to be able to build a solid device that could perform this functions, controlled by the BX-24 microprocessor.

Ideas for projects
9/24/01

I don't have a specific idea of the kind of project I'd like to develop. but one of the elements that I like the most for an interactive project are infrared devices. I'd like to develop some interactive experience that would not necesarily tie the user to a physical element, I'd like the user to move around and "point and shoot" with a remote control, and then have different responses.

I find this kind of project interesting for kids, to have them play around. It could have a cultural background for adults, as the remote control of the TV is considered a "deprogramming tool" against the TV diet big media conglomerates try to impose on us. Maybe from this concept a good idea could take shape as soon as I have more elements to design a project, and as soon as I know how far can we go in terms of what we will learn this semester.
