Online Chat

Internet Relay Chat ("IRC") (1994-2000)
  • Participated in live, text-based conversations on several IRC networks including DALnet, EFnet, Undernet, BrasIRC, and broadcast.com.
  • Familiar with various programs for IRC (including mIRC, PIRCH, ViRC, ichat, Homer, Ircle, ircII, among others).
  • Served as channel operator (moderator/host) on various IRC channels (rooms), both U.S. and international.
  • Interacted with people of all ages from all over the world.
  • Kept track of issues related to IRC by regular reading of mailing lists, newsgroups, Web sites, and other online documentation pertaining to chat.
  • Knowledgeable about other chat systems (including America Online, CompuServe, CoolTalk, ConferenceRoom, GlobalChat, ICQ, Instant Messenger, Palace).
IRC Server Operator ("IRCop") (1996-2000)
  • DALnet IRC network, sodre.dal.net server, nickname "lola"
  • Basic knowledge of technical aspects of maintaining, routing, and linking IRC servers.
  • Assisted other IRCops and users to maintain orderly social/technological environment on one of the largest international IRC networks.
  • Responsible for helping users with wide range of problems (from software glitches to complaints of online harassment).
  • Explained DALnet services/policies to users; directed users to appropriate sources for further information/assistance.
  • Held advanced IRCop status of Channel Services Operator ("CSop") to assist users with channel and nickname passwords, and Services Administrator ("SA") to administer network-wide sanctions.
  • Enforced DALnet policies concerning acceptable online behavior; warned and removed abusive users from network.
  • Corresponded electronically with DALnet administrators, users, and Internet Service Providers ("ISPs") concerning incidents of abuse/misbehavior.
  • Interpreted/translated foreign languages for other IRCops, users, and ISPs around the world, both online and in electronic mail.
Host/Director of Jazz Chat Live® (formerly JazzIRC®) (1995-1998)
  • Conducted live online chat sessions for with major international jazz artists from the world-renowned Blue Note jazz club in New York City in conjunction with InterJazz.
  • Introduced artists to chat concepts/session protocol; provided online tours of Blue Note and InterJazz Web sites.
  • Served as host, moderator, and announcer for chat sessions; promoted enjoyable and orderly discussion among artists and audience participants.
  • Coordinated session scheduling with InterJazz and Blue Note staff.
  • Provided technical expertise to InterJazz concerning IRC software/networks; customized IRC software; trained InterJazz staff on IRC.
  • Conducted other special event chat sessions for InterJazz at different venues as well (e.g., sessions with film and television artists).
