Pieces, cloves, and hippiness at the Trey Anastasio (Phish) + friends show last night. The Mann Music Center was a beehive of activity, with more Birks, gooballs, vegans, marijuana, and tie-dye that I've seen in my life (counting out my family get-togethers). Culture shock for me, who's been frequenting noise rock and hip hop shows for the most part, unaware that Phish crowd members teem with affection and kindness 24/7, though Adam tells me it's a worthy enough cause for a research paper (I don't hesitate to agree). Trey Anastasio's performance, comprised of two approximately hour and a half sets, was more generous and unpretentious than any show on which I can think back. Trey plays to the crowd as well as Mick Jagger, but with more clothing and dignity. A seamless fusion of sounds and styles, rhythmed lighting, a ten-piece (more or less) band, and a hardcore appreciation of the crowd perpetuated the event, washing you over with this fantastic feeling of fuzziness, serenity, and contact high. Let's rock n' roll!
"Watch out, here I come, come, come . . . . If I, I get to know your name. Will I, get to take your private number, baby! All I know is that to me, you look like you're lots of fun, open up your loving arms, I want some, want some! I set my sights on you (I know what else we'll do!). And I, I get to have my way now, baby! All I know is that to me, you look like you're having fun, open up your loving arms, watch out, here I come! You spin me right round baby, right round like a record baby right round, round round (2x). I, I got to be your friend now, baby. And I, would like to move in just a little bit closer (a little bit closer!). All I know is that to me, you look like you're lots of fun, open up your loving arms, watch out, here I come!!!" - Dead or Alive
The 1980s were the best era for not only Wall Street films and hairspray, but British pop music as well.
How happy I am to report that in addition to Jeremiah, Sandie is a Pixies fan (I'm the baby Pixies fan).
Going back to Britpop, Duran Duran's sleeper hit "The Chauffeur" is covered wonderfully by the Deftones. Way down the lane away, living for another day. The aphids swarm up in the drifting haze. Swim seagull in the sky, towards that other Western isle. My envied lady holds you fast in her gaze. And the sun drips down bedding heavy behind, and the front of your dress so shadowy light. And the droning engine throbs in time with your beating heart. Sing, blue silver!
Though I am still angry that NYC's AMC Empire failed to distribute bananas at the Friday night screening of Tim Burton's Planet of the Apes, I enjoyed the film (despite Burton's overt divergence from his usual kafkaesque narrative style and art direction). I like apes. I also like clean, Pennsylvania air. I like month-long hasta la vistas from New York City. I like short-term laziness.
