Jeremiah and I watched the DVD of Tobe Hooper's The Texas Chain Saw Massacre last night. There's some wicked stuff in that movie open to interpretation, such as the theme of the "final girl," the idea that sex=death, cannibalism and consumption, the roles of water and gasoline, family domesticity, youth/hippie culture, slaughterhouse culture and animal cruelty.
Have you ever seen a muffin devour someone? How about a talking muffin tree? If you don't believe me, go here for some bad-ass muffin short animated pieces. Thank you Emily for the link!
Jason and I saw Shallow Hal this afternoon (I'll post a review later on). Afterwards, we met up with Devanshi and Candace at Benny's Burritos in the East Village. Their lemonade and vegetarian chili burritos are fan-tas-tic.
The Sonic Youth show turned out to be very pleasing last night. For only $5 there were hours of entertainment from Chris Lee (Jared and I agree he strongly resembles Steve Perry from Journey), followed by J. Mascis (from Dinosaur Jr...played some acoustic Neil Young-esque tunes with distortion sound effects - a soft, acoustic rock sound blended with random, loud distortion made for some cool rockin' beats), and finally Sonic Youth, who played hard and unapologetically for a seemingly, and unfortunately, short set. Kim Gordon plays a wicked guitar and bass, and can really wail, too; Jim O'Rourke and Thurston Moore were very impressive as well. See below for the good, good photos for which Jeremiah is responsible.
Man, I think I have scurvy. I haven't eaten any fruits or vegetables in like, a really long time. Unless French fries (potatoes) and coffee (a bean) qualify.
Soho's finest, the Luna Lounge, featured some bands tonight including Blue Sandcastles and, of, course, MAN.in.GRAY.
But first, Jeremiah and I dined at the Katz Delicatessen on Houston Street. Our meal of hamburgers, fries, and cake was twice as expensive as it should be, three times as unhealthy, and half as good as McDonald's. But look at the crowds:
Botchy balls! A crew is filming Men in Black 2 - again - in front of my building. I hope I "accidentally" walk into some shots.
I just heard on Howard Stern that Gwyneth Paltrow is disturbed by actors want to be rock stars and rock stars who want to be actors. I also heard she is singing on Sheryl Crow's new album.
Emily, you artistic artist, you! The digs are shaping up to look fan-tast-tic.
Catching up on film reviews, the new Coen Brothers' flick, The Man Who Wasn't There, is excellent. Beautiful lighting and art design. On the flipside, David Mamet's The Heist really blew (with the exception of Danny DeVito). If you're lucky, I'll write full reviews, maybe even as monstrous as Donnie Darko's (see below). Luckily, we snuck into Heist after seeing The Man Who Wasn't There, so, although we wasted two hours, we didn't waste any cash on the second film. It goes to show you...the best things in life are not necessarily free.
As they tell you in Atlantic City... Gamble with your head, not over it! By the way, I was in Atlantic City, NJ, when Paramount was shooting that Nicholas Cage vehicle Snake Eyes...man, did that end up to be a goofy movie. I thought I'd enjoy it regardless since Nick Cage and I sort of "hung out" in Jersey, but it was still a very, very bad motion picture.
