Reading David Nasaw's Going Out -- a chronicle of public amusements in early 20th century America -- for my Modern America course, I came across a passage that made me laugh:

"The primary source of revenue in the concert saloons was selling alcohol....The ambience was pure saloon - the floor filled with peanut shells and spilt beer; the air saturated with tobacco smoke; and the odor so rank that according to one newspaper story, a monkey that had 'escaped from an animal act and died under the floor of the Casino Theater in Spokane was not discovered until a year later when some repairs were being made.'"

How random. This story reminds me of that infamous incident at Studio 54 in the 1970s, you know, where the guy wanted in so badly he crawled through a ventilation pipe along the side of the building. Or tried to, rather. That's unfortunate!

No brouhaha last night at Washington Square Park. I think the cold weather scared the protesters away. It is pseudo-amusing to see the countless police officers stationed in front of all of New York's McDonald's and Starbucks.

Friday Five:

1. Have you ever had braces? Any other teeth trauma?
Braces are for pteradactyls, suckas!

2. Ever broken any bones?
Yeah. In addition to breaking their bones, you should see what I did to their faces!! Punks.

3. Ever had stitches?
It was a dark and windy January day in 1990. As I turned a sharp corner on my bicycle on an icy, blizzard-wrecked road, the ice skates dangling from my bicycle's handlebars swung out, and swung back full force into the wheel's spokes. I flipped head over heels over the top of the bike, and fell on my chin. Needless to say, it was bloody hell...I gots me fifteen -- that's right, fifteen! -- stitches.

4. What are the stories behind some of your [physical] scars?
A slight scar from the aforementioned chin stitches, a three-inch scar on my left hand from a protruding mattress spring, a circular scar on my knee from a dirtbike accident when I was eight, a chicken pox scar under my cheekbone, an abrasion-scar on my right ankle from being slammed into a concrete post when I was nineteen (don't ask). Since I'm clumsy, everyday I usually acquire new bruises, papercuts, track marks ... Er ... I mean bruises and papercuts.

5. How do you plan to spend your weekend?
Getting scars...lots of them!

Figure out the #1 radio hit on your birthday! To name a few: my 1st birthday's top hit was John Lennon's (Just Like) Starting Over; Billy Joel's Uptown Girl on my 3rd birthday; on my 7th birthday, Tiffany's I Think We're Alone Now was top; my 9th birthday - Poison's Every Rose Has Its Thorn; my 16th birthday's top hit was the Spice Girls' Say You'll Be There. That's neat!

Make sure to comment back on what your results are! Thanks to Last Bus Anywhere for the link!

Setton Sun Productions, Ishai's film production company, boasts an excellent new website. Read about Ishai's films, write him an email, explore the website, wear it on a T-shirt.

Damn right it was a good day. Got my employment papers in order, started organizing the film department's student conference, went to class, and am about to leave for another class. And I got a free coffee at the deli this afternoon today because they overcharged me earlier this morning. Word.

Here are some shots from the midtown Manhattan Macy's. The store probably thought we were corporate spies, or something dope like that.
