Saw Moonlight Mile tonight and was utterly offended, which is a shame because the trailer was good and was its inclusion of the Elton John tune "Someone Saved My Life Tonight." More on that later. Another movie to avoid, at least in my opinion, is Secretary. That's all I have to say about that.
And now for the shameless promotion of one of New York's coolest rock bands, Man in Gray. They will be playing a live show on Saturday, October 5th (tonight) at 8pm at the Continental Bar, which is located at 25 Third Avenue at St. Mark's Place in the East Village. Admission is $5 and 21+, and includes a bunch of additional bands. Drinks are half-price from 4-8pm, so show up early if you would like to take advantage. Check out the band website for more show information, MP3s, photos, et cetera. Be there or be square!
Yesterday at the Salvation Army on 23rd Street, I picked up three tapes: Depeche Mode, Speak and Spell, A Flock of Seagulls, The Best of A Flock of Seagulls ("Space Age Love Song" rules!!!), and Siouxsie and the Banshees, Tinderbox, as well as a seemingly brand-new copy of Eric Schlosser's "Fast Food Nation," for a total cost of under $4.00! I just can't get enough, I just can't get enough.
Becca and I showed up around 11:15am for the twelve o'clock free White Stripes concert at Union Square Park today, and were baffled by the absence of the anticipated throng of NYU kids and other "hipsters." Nearing showtime, the crowd ostensibly grew, but getting there early we lucked out and were only a few feet from the stage.
When the White Stripes became well-known a while back, I sort of dismissed them. I did listen to White Blood Cells a few times and enjoyed it, but today was the first time I really heard them. The shoe was really rocking and both Jack and Meg White have a great stage presence, despite the hot weather and the crazed Hell's Angels. Oops, wrong show.
After a dope hour-long set, Jack announced the duo would be playing their last song, but as he started singing, power was (intentionally?) turned off and the band was apparently told their time limit was reached (I assumed some stuck-up yuppies in the surroundings office buildings were probably filing complaints about the noise or something...but it was probably permit-related). Instead of abandoning a roused audience, Jack asked for silence so that he could just yell out the song without a microphone. It was pretty memorable! Dana and I took many, many photos, which I will probably blog tomorrow. Rock n' roll!
WinMX is so cool. When my PC crashed last fall and I lost over five hundred MP3s, I was emotionally scarred and took a year-long break from downloading music. Tonight, Cheryl reminded me how much music sharing rules, so I hooked myself up with Winamp and WinMX again. I only have five MP3s so far -- Abba, "Voulez Vous," The Cardigans, "Hey! Get out of My Way," Man in Gray, "Stale," Peter Schilling, "Major Tom (Coming Home)" and last but not least, the "Perfect Strangers" television theme -- but more are hopefully on the way. Rad!
I stumbled upon this case of squirrel envy. I sort of wish I did not. This, however is one of my favorite squirrel-related pages (does this song sound like The Pixies to anyone else?)
Jeremiah and I saw 8 Femmes (or Eight Women) tonight. The film was fun, well-written, and stars a cornucopia of beautiful French actresses. What more can you ask for!
Best of Will Ferrell is on Saturday Night Live! Botchy balls, I love the Blue Oyster Cult "More cowbell!" sketch and the "I drive a Dodge Stratus!" bit.
