I started my new fulltime job today ... that's right, my full-time job! A job!!! The product of four months of exhaustive searching, a handful of disappointing interviews, being broke, and sending out literally hundreds of resumes. The position is at a documentary film production company in Chelsea, screening and taking notes on documentary video clips and assisting the producers / editor. Many of the films are World War II-related, which is great because I was beginning to think a BFA in Cinema Studies and minor in history from NYU were somewhat useless in the current job market in New York City.
The outcome of having found a fulltime position is overwhelmingly excellent. I am very, very happy!
I took a short break from writing my paper about Cold War subtexts in Splash tonight to watch part of "She Spies." Yeah, I know. As campy and cliched as it may be, it's really a goofy, fun television show.
My standards have really dropped, I think, since finishing film school.
Speaking of movies, I watched the Coen Brothers' Fargo tonight. Having never seen it before, I had to see what all the fuss is about. To tell you the truth, it didn't completely live up to my expectations. It had a superb script, great acting, and was shot extremely well. But in the grand scheme of filmic things, it felt like something was missing. I can't quite put my finger on it, though. As much as I enjoy Raising Arizona, I'm not a big fan of Blood Simple or O Brother, Where Art Thou? Maybe the Coen Brothers are an acquired taste.
Jeremiah and I saw Spike Jonze's new movie, Adaptation, this weekend. It was really amazing. I wish I had more energy to write something thoughtful about it, but I will say it is one of the best films I've seen in a long time. I was quite surprised I liked it so much because I did not enjoy Being John Malkovich.
I had three interviews last week - one at Barnes and Noble, one at a documentary film production company, and one for an assistant to a television producer. I think they went fairly well, but I won't know for another few days. We've also been busy doing a little feng shui to ye olde apartment, which has been pretty fun, but time-consuming. Additionally, I've been trying to work on my application for grad school. Shudder. To quote Walter Kornbluth (Eugene Levy) in Splash: "What a week I'm having!"
