PeeWee's Big Adventure rules! The DVD has some really great commentary with Paul Reubens and Tim Burton. Originally, the film wasn't even supposed to revolve around the bicycle. Who knew?
The Twisted Sister cameo!
The morning sun transforms our living room into a mecca of noir!
Happy Holidays!
Just saw the Director's Guild screening of George Clooney's new film, Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, based on the life and career of game show creator / host Chuck Barris. It was quite good. Hopefully a review soon. Word!
Since moving to New York, I've never really had any major issues with New York city public transit. Sure, the booth operators are sometimes rude, the conductors don't hesitate to shut the doors on people, and the 6 train, which is the only subway line that runs up the East side of Manhattan, is often unhealthily overcrowded. Overall, though, I have been relatively pleased with the service provided.
Now I'm an advocate of safe working conditions, the forty-hour work week, fair labor practices, and appropriate monetary compensation for workers. To tell you the truth, however, I think it's a little strange that the union is preparing to strike this week. After all, New York City is already in enough debt, public schools are already in trouble, the job market is horrible, and plenty of New Yorkers are already having enough trouble trying to make ends meet in recent months. Not to mention, the city anticipates losing literally millions of dollars if the strike interferes with holiday shopping, which it inevitably will.
In all honesty, though, and fellow New Yorkers, don't take offense, I think it would be somewhat exciting to experience a transit strike (that is, granted there are no emergencies that are caused by, or worsened by, the strike). I wouldn't mind the 80-block walk to and from work, for a few days at least. There is a certain element of excitement about being part of New York City history.
In the past several days, New York City news television programs have been ridiculously sensationalistic. Of course it's totally understandable to be constantly updated, but it's somewhat amusing how newscasters practice such intense histrionics in front of the camera. However, as much as I feel this possibility of strike has been overblown, the city and the media have spent an awful lot of money on contingency plans -- maybe they know something the public does not.
At any rate, for all you New Yorkers who may be affected by the transit strike, a friend of mine has a friend who works for the union, and rumor is that the strike will not actually begin until Tuesday morning, not Monday morning as anticipated.
One more thing - does anyone else think Mayor Bloomberg's quote "My job is to not shut up" is really funny? (Roger Toussaint snapped at him to shut up). New York, New York!
