The snowstorm of January 22:

On Saturday, January 22, serious snow finally arrived in New York City. I worked that day from 10-4; when I left, a couple inches were already on the ground and more was coming down! I work across the street from the New York Public Library, and so one of the first things I saw upon exiting my workplace and crossing 42nd St. was the feline statuary outside the NYPL, all covered in snow:
Madison Square Park (at Fifth Avenue and 23rd-26th Sts) is always a pretty attractive place, but it's especially pretty in a snowstorm:
I made a long detour in order to see lovely Gramercy Park, which is in one of my favorite areas (the base of Lexington Avenue):
The snow continued well into the night. When I woke up, this was what I saw out my window. My room overlooks a "courtyard" (in the broadest sense of the word, since it's not that pretty and no one ever uses it), and for once I had a pretty cool view.
That day I decided to go for a walk through Washington Square and the West Village. Washington Square Park looked great in the snow; it wasn't plowed very much, and so the drifts were fun.
Kids were sledding down the two smallish hills by the chess tables in the southwest corner of the park!
After meandering through the park, I headed towards the crookedly fun West Village. The streets were incredibly breautiful; here's Bank St:
I think these staircases are attractive. They seem to be an east-coast thing, because they're everywhere in Boston and in the residential parts of New York City, but I sure haven't ever seen them in Minneapolis.
Next I headed in a easterly direction, towards Broadway. I crossed Fifth Ave very near to Rubin and saw this church, which is on Fifth and 12th St.:
When I reached Broadway, I caught this stunning view of the MetLife Tower and the Empire State Building. Dusk was approaching and the buildings were just beginning to be lit up for the night.
Turning south on Broadway, I saw one more attractive snow-covered church. This one is on Broadway at 11th St., I believe. It was recently restored; in fact, the scaffolding covering its spire just came down a couple weeks ago.
Look, my sort-of-curly locks have become very long:
This is a picture from a different day (though I'm not sure if it was before or after the snowstorm), but here I am with Taina. I think this was the night that I stayed up until about 3:30 AM talking with four awesome neighbors, as evidenced by the fact that Dustin is sitting at my desk in the background of this picture.
