Mapping the Causes of the 1929 Stock Market Crash - a relationship mindmap

Read notes on mindmaps first so you will understand important terms such as note, node and link.

Background: The stock market crash that began in 1929 continued until July 8, 1932, when the stock market fell to its lowest point during the Depression !

Essential Question: Could the stock market crash of 1929 have been prevented?

More detailed questions to consider:

What are some of the causes the 1929 Stock Market Crash?  See your social studies textbook, do internet research, or see excerpts from Mr. Hoss' notes if you need hints... Also, check my page of brief research links for ideas.
What safeguards (preventive measures or laws / programs) could the government or other companies or agencies have created or instituted to help prevent the crash?  You will need to be 'creative' to come up with these, or use what you know about how the stock market and the government works today...

Use Inspiration software to document the 1929 Stock Market Crash as a mindmap. Click on the thumbnail to the right to see a larger partial version of a sample mindmap.  This is only a sample diagram. It is incomplete.  Yours should be complete and have considerably more nodes and much better detail than the sample example.

Trial versions of Inspiration for home use are available at their website.  Be advised that the free trial has an expiration date and it cannot be re-installed on the same computer twice.  You must use the version of software available in D-13 to work on this project.

Be reminded of my definitions for this mindmap:

Cause - some event, law, procedure, or process that is partially responsible for the 1929 Stock Market Crash (one of my examples: Buying on Margin).  You can find many causes from Mr. Hoss' notes.

Safeguard - what procedures, laws, or processes (had they been put in place) might have prevented the 1929 Stock Market Crash (one of my examples: Margin Restrictions).  Other examples are:

Development of SEC (Securities and Exchange Commission) and related laws

Creation of FDIC (Federal Deposit Insurance Corp)

If you don't know what those are, research them or look them up.

You may need to review your social studies notes, make some guesses as to what might be an appropriate safeguard, or do some outside reading or research to come up with a safeguard.  You must find a corresponding safeguard for each cause.  If you cannot find one, do not select that cause.

Procedure - How to do the project

Your mindmap must include a main node labeled '1929 Stock Market Crash', at least 5 'cause' nodes, 5 'safeguard' nodes and related notes for each node.  Explain each cause and safeguard in detail using a note.  Remember that the labels for each node should be short.  Put the detailed info into the notes.  You must cite any references or web sources you use.

Use of graphics or pictures to enhance your work is required.  Cite the source of your image in the note of the node (only IMAGE URL a citation is required).

Each node needs a graphic.  DO NOT USE CLIP ART.  Don't forget to edit your images using Photoshop (Resize, Crop then Save for the Web) before you use 'Insert Graphic in Inspiration', otherwise you may run out of network space.

Use a 'disconnected' node for your name and period information.

You must print both views - outline and diagram and staple to the rubric handed out in class for grading.

Do not use SAVE AS to submit to D13SHARE - you must do drag and drop from the MY COMPUTER icon to D13SHARE.  If you forget to do this, you may destroy your file.
