The purpose of the Toshiba ExploraVision competition is to encourage students to combine their imagination with their knowledge of science to create a vision of a future technology that solves a specific problem, and hopes to further improve society.

Project Startup

Read the project rules for Edgemont students working in D-13.

Read the project startup steps and complete a Team Information Sheet

Your MS-Word Team information sheet has room for pictures (optional).  Use Insert->Picture From File commands to get your photos into your document if you do this.  Use auto shapes from the drawing toolbar or original artwork for logos.

You must get my approval to proceed with your project concept after you complete your Team Information Sheet.  Do not work without my approval.

Project Details

Carefully read the general page formatting guidelines for the final research paper.

Please use Times New Roman 12 point font, double spaced, 1" margins for all sections of the paper.  Page numbers are required for some sections, so read the guidelines carefully.

Direct links to key sections (you will be working on these first):

Future Tech
Design Process

You need about 11 pages of research and design, plus a separate abstract page and a separate bibliography page !  Once the Future Tech and Design Process sections have been written, split up the rest of the work amongst the team !

Warning: Plagiarizing other people's work, or using information from other sources in your paper without fully citing and crediting the source will result in disciplinary consequences and a zero for the project.  Always summarize technical descriptions and ideas in your own words to the best of your ability.  If you don't understand it, don't write about it.

Each reference source needs a formal citation.  See my citations page!

Important: if you decide to interview a source (by email, phone, or in person), you must speak with Mr. Silverman first and provide the contact information (phone or e-mail) before you contact anyone on your own Do not e-mail anyone outside the school about the project, without my written permission.

Get a copy of the draft project template ( MS-Word) as an outline (optional).

More On How To Do Research

Doing the research is the most difficult part of the assignment for many students.  Use an Internet Directory, Search engine, or my Quick Link Resources to search for tech info on your topic on the web.  Also, check recent news sources, periodicals, and subscription databases available through the school (EBSCO, Proquest, Student Resource Center etc.)

DO NOT USE WIKIPEDIA, ANSWERS.COM or similar websites.

You are strongly encouraged to visit the library and even contact other knowledge experts (other teachers and people who work in industry) for more information, as is possible.

However - Do not directly email or call anyone outside the school community without obtaining my written permission first.

Past news articles that were favorites of students are:
Monitoring Human Brain Waves
Cars that talk back

Fascinating tech fact: Technion-Israel Institute of Technology researchers have created transistors by mixing carbon nanotubes, silver, gold, and protein molecules in a test tube with DNA !

Grading

There are at least 3 separate grade components for this project !  At least two of them count for the second quarter grade (2Q).  The class presentation grade will probably count for your third quarter (3Q) grade because of scheduling and testing that occurs in the month of January.

The research paper counts as two (2) projects (there will be an interim draft due of some sections and a final paper)

See this page for the interim rough draft rubric and grading.

Read the final project rubric for the research carefully !

Parents: See my article on teaching with ExploraVision in ISTE's Learning & Leading with Technology !

Team Presentation

See the page on doing a team presentation for ideas for this part of the project. This is your third grade for the project, but may be a 3Q grade.  You can use PowerPoint or other media to support your presentation with my permission.
