Wesleyan Invitational

steve and john in the 1000m

On December 8, a partial squad from the NYU Men's Track Team traveled to Middletown, Connecticut for the 2001 Wesleyan Invitational. The unscored meet was the only meet the Violets will participate in this semester and served as a checkpoint as the fall training season comes to a close. The NYU athletes that competed did so often in events that were not their specialty. The performances there provided a benchmark as the team points towards more intense competition in January.

Notable performances were achieved by Steve Frattini (1st, 2:40.66) in the 1000 meters; Matt McCloskey (2nd, 1:10.35), Jeff Brennan (3rd, 1:10.73) and Dave Messina (7th, 1:11.41) in the 500m; Thy Nyguen (3rd, 8.36) and Kevin Flynn (5th, 8.53) in the 55m hurdles; and Tris Carver (4th, 23.80/7th, 6.93) in the 200m and 55m respectively. The 4x400 meter relay team of Tris Carver, Jeff Brennan, Matt McCloskey, and Steve Frattini finished second in 3:34.48.

NYU returns to action following the holiday break January 12 at the Lehigh John Covert Classic.

BU Terrier Classic

On January 25, the NYU Men's Track Team again travelled to Boston, this time for the BU Terrier Classic, which would be run this year for the last time on the famed BU track. Next season they will christen a new indoor facility. NYU began the meet strong with each of four runners acheiving personal bests in Friday night's distance events. Freshman Vinnie Zarrillo set his second school record of the season (the first was his 8:39 3000m last week) with a time of 14:45 in the 5000 meters. The time places him on the provisional list for indoor nationals as well. Also running the 5000m for NYU was Tucker Rader, who finished in 16:00. In the 3000m, Joe Clabby ran 8:58, and Anthony Maniscalco ran 9:17.

On Saturday, several strong performances were again recorded. BJ DeGuzman and Thy Ngyuen ran 6.90 and 6.93 in the 55m, respectively. Tris Carver and Ngyuen ran 23.72 and 23.74 for the 200m, while Carver and Matt McCloskey ran 52.47 and 52.72 for the 400m. Jeff Brennan(1:09.85) and Greg Brown(1:11.33) tackled the 500m, while Les Page(1:58.81) and Joe Clabby(4:31.35) ran season bests in the 800m and 1 mile. Matt McCloskey, in his first vaults of the year, cleared 14-6.

Keough Invite @ Haverford

After 3 consecutive weekend's of big meets, the NYU Men's track team finished a week of intense training with a day meet at Haverford, a meet they used more for training than for fast times. Pace through the first 1600m by fellow freshman Joe Clabby, Vinnie Zarrillo ran 8:41 to win the 3000m. Earlier in the day, Clabby was enroute to a solid 800m finish when he was clipped Zola Budd style and took a hard plunge to the ground. Another solid performance was achieved by senior Anthony Maniscalco in the 1500m, an event he does not often run. Others running events not typical for them were Les Page (4:09) in the 1500 and Steve Frattini (53.6) in the 400m. The team is off this coming weekend as they put the final touches on their training for the UAA Indoor Championships, March 1-2 at Brandeis.

Hurricane Invitational

NYU kicked off the outdoor season with a week of training in Miami that lead to the Hurricane Invitational. Following a week of intense training, the team did not expect many outstanding performances in this unscored meet; however, Steve Frattini, Tucker Radar, and Tris Carver set the tone for what should be a promising season for the Violets. Controversy once again found Steve in the 800m, where combined heats made the race look more suited for the roads. As a consequence, despite numerous hand times at 1:57, Steve's official result after reviewing the tape was 1:58.17. Tucker ran a near personal best in the steeple (10:19) while Tris recorded strong times of 51.7 and 23.1 in the 400m and 200m.

Monmouth Invitational

What a difference a week makes. In Miami, the NYU men were fighting the heat and burned feet as well as their opponents. Monmouth posed a different challenge: the wind and cold of late March on the Jersey shore. Despite the conditions, a few individuals had notable performances: Karl Schmidt surpassed twenty feet in the long jump, Tucker Rader matched his steeple time from sunny Miami, and Thy Nyguen ran 15.57 in his 110 hurdle debut despite missing the last 2 weeks of practice. NYU closed the meet with three strong sprint medley relays (200-200-400-800). Meanwhile, Cougar did his best impression of Tucker. The Monmouth Invite was also parent's weekend, and the team thanks the many parents who braved the elements to see their sons compete.
