The NYU tracksters made the most of a weekend to trip Boston. The team recorded 8 personal and/or season bests at the BU FasTrack Invitational.

Getting things started for the violets was Junior Tucker Rader, whose 5k of 15:33 was a personal best by 20 seconds. Next up were Sophomore Travis Keany and Freshman BJ Kraska in the mile. The duo began the race in the middle of the pack and moved up throughout. Kraska (4:18) led with Keany (4:15) on his heals until the last lap. Each recorded a pr. Later in the evening, Sophomore Jon Mummolo (4:31) also recorded a personal best in the mile.

Half milers Brian Beuchal and Les Page each ran aggessively. Beuchal(1:55.43) pr'd and won his heat. Page(1:55.86) was .02 off his best, set outdoors last spring. The effort was, a season and indoor best.

Vinnie Zarrillo continues to recover from the injuries which have plagued him for the past year. Zarrillo ran 8:53 for 3000m, a season best. Later in the evening, freshman Matt McMickle ran 8:44 for 3k, a pr of 16 seconds, and a mark nearly 40 seconds faster than his high school best for 3200 meters.

In the field events, Karim Annabi high jumped 6-03.25 and Felix Cheung triple jumped 37-08.75. The violets have one more tune-up meet prior to the indoor conference championships. This home meet (February 28, 2003, 4pm, The Armory) offers a chance for many violets to meet the standards for indoor nationals.

FasTrack Invitational, Armory Track and Field Center

On Friday, February 28, NYU hosted the fasTrack Invitational at the Armory Track and Field Center. It was the first track meet hosted by NYU in nearly 40 years and gave competitors the opportunity to meet qualifying standards for season-ending championship meets. Top performances at the meet included Aliann Pompey (52.17, 400m, Unattached), Sheila Klick (4:45.44, 1mile, LaSalle), Szeglet Zsolt (47.07, 400m, Unattached) and Peter Riley (14:02.59, 5000m, Iona).

Top performances and personal bests for NYU included Brian Buechel (1:55.20) and Les Page (1:55.45) in the 800m run, Jon Mummolo (2:38.84) in the 1000m run, and Vinnie Zarrillo (8:42.72) and Tucker Rader(8:57.41) in the 3000m run. NYU finished the meet strong by winning the 4x800m relay. The quartet of Buechel, Travis Keany, BJ Kraska, and Page (all competing in their second event of the meet) clocked 7:53.50, with Page anchoring in 1:55.

The Violets compete in the UAA Indoor Championships this coming weekend at Brandeis University.

UAA Championships

The NYU Tracksters closed the indoor track season this past weekend at the UAA Championships hosted by Brandeis University. The distance medley relay of Les Page, BJ Kraska, Brian Buechel, and Vinnie Zarrillo placed first in a meet record time of 10:23. It marked the second consecutive year that NYU won the relay. Travis Keany took second place honors in the 1500m (4:03.03), while Page (1:56.45/800m) and Karim Annabi (1.95m/HJ) earned third place finishes. Others scoring for the Violets were Buechel(800m, 6th) Zarrillo (3000m, 5th).
