Welcome to the 2006 Human Rights and Media summer workshop in Brazil. During this two-week summer course, students will be affiliated with Viva Rio, one of the most prestigious Brazilian NGOs (non-governmental organizations) that sponsors various human rights and media programs throughout Rio de Janeiro. Students will study international human rights standards, the role of international and local NGOs in the Brazilian human rights movement, the everyday practice of human rights at the community level, and as a special focus, the role of media in representing and promoting human rights. The course will run from July 10 - July 21. Students who are encouraged to apply include university students with a strong interest in human rights studies, media studies students who wish to focus on human rights themes, Latin American Studies students, journalism students who would like to learn more about human rights reporting, and international NGO workers.
