Thesis Project:  Ryan Sylvester

Question:  Rate your ability to maintain good eye contact with your audience

Rating Scale:  ( 0 = Very Ineffective and 10 = Very Effective)

Out of 235 people who presented at the conference, 65 completed the pre-conference survey and 45 completed the post-conference survey.  However out of the data submitted only 39 records were usable.

Participant Pre-Conference Survey (15) Post-Conference Survey (17) Because of your experience at the Student Academic Conference, did your ability to maintain good eye contact (increase, decrease, no change) (Post 18) Briefly explain how speaking at the Student Academic Conference either made your ability to maintain good eye contact increase or decrease (Post 19)
7 6 increase People felt like I was talking right to them if I made eye contact, so I made a point to look at who I was talking to.
7 5 no change This actually didn't really apply to my presentation because copies of my story were handed out and everyone followed along. I would probably do it differently next time because no one looked at me and all eyes were on my paper.
8 8 no change
6 9 increase Because I was better prepared for the presentation, my confidence level was higher, thereby increasing my comfort level with looking at the audience rather than my notes.
10 10 no change
6 7 increase no change. My presentation was a hindrance because I had to control it, therefore reducing eye contact with my audience. However, I tried to at least use a great deal of eye contact with them, as it's important.
10 6 no change no change
5 6 no change more practice
8 10 no change
0 10 increase
5 2 no change AS i said before, my teacher told us just to read our paper, so I didn't have good eye contact.
9 8 no change
9 10 no change I'm good with eye contact already. I don't feel I need improvement.
10 9 no change Eye contact was necessary, so I did it as much as I could.
9 0 increase
7 10 no change Eye contact is very importantn in order to find out if those you are speaking to understand what you are saying.
10 10 no change
8 7 no change none
10 10 no change I am presenting a memorized speech; I look at the audience during my entire presentation. That never changes.
6 6 no change
5 7 increase I thought that it made we more aware of the fact that I should try to maintain eye contact.
8 9 no change
8 6 no change
6 8 no change
7 3 decrease I have to not read my presentation and not have the sentence written out for me to look
8 7 no change
10 10 no change I don't read from a script. I know the importance of eye contact. Often, the success of your speech will be judged on your contact with the audience.
10 9 increase Because I was able to talk directly and with confidence about my topic and feeling comfortable about the topic, I was able to maintain eye contact with those that stopped by my poster.
8 10 no change
7 9 no change
2 9 no change no change--i feel i have good eye contact with people
6 9 no change Eye contact during a presentation has always been something I focus on, so there was no significant change.
5 7 increase I made a very conscious effort to maintain eye contact with the audience during my presentation.
6 9 no change had speech memorized so no need to look down
10 10 increase Again, the more opportunities you have to do this the more comfortable you become.
9 7 no change I don't belive that this had any bearing on my comfortability with eye contact
10 9 no change
5 8 no change
7 9 increase Each time a person presents, they are able to feel more comfortable maintaining eye contact.
