Responses to Questions from the Pre-Conference Survey

Out of 235 people who presented at the conference, 65 completed the pre-conference survey and 45 completed the post-conference survey.  However out of the data submitted only 39 records were usable.

Participant 11.  Briefly outline all factors that led to your decision to present at the Student Academic Conference:
I completed a content analysis first semester, and my professor encouraged me to present.
I am a science researcher and the point of doing research is to find out about new ideas and techniques to share with the world. Hence, it is my desire to share with the people attending the Conference my research strategies.
A friend of mine was interested in putting together a panel and asked if I would like to join in.
  Faculty nomination and encouragement
I believe that participation in such conferences strengthens the students resume, as well as providing a full university experience.
-good opportunity to improve speaking/presentation skills -looks good on resume -required for class
  It was required for class
It is a requirement for Acting Styles.
The primary factor that influenced my decision is that grad schools look favorably upon having presented at conferences
I have presented at the conference in the past and I find it to be a really good experience. It aides me in my public speaking skills and gives me the opportunity to present my research.
All the students doing a research project in the Biology department present their research at this conference. I decided to do an oral presentation, because it will be a good way to expose myself to speaking in public. Also, in graduate school you do oral presentations.
primarily my mentors thought it would be a good idea for me to present my research since i will be giving a talk at the Minnesota Academy of Science at the end of April. Also it's a good opportunity to let other students know about the research that I'm doing.
Good experience for presenting at a formal level, looks good on resume.
I figured that the work was already done, might as well do something with it. Plus I'm proud of my paper.
I've had a great exprerience at MSUM so far and this is just one more I would like to get involved in
I wanted the experience of presenting at a conference
-it will enable my preparation for graduate presentations -it's during the school week and on campus
I thought it would look good on my resume. We also get extra credit in class
It is required for my senior sem class
I want to gain presentation skills; I think it will be fun; It might help me when I apply for MBA; I just couldn't miss it!
-the opportunity to present my work on the speech and debate team to other students to encourage them to try out forensics -more experience presenting topics
  Requirement for methods class
My advisor strongly encouraged us to do so. Also, I knew it would be good practice for grad school and that it would look good on a resume.
I am doing an advocacy project as a requirement for a class. This was and option and apealed to me.
Good experience, a chance to share the research I did. Motivation to get the research done. A chance to try something I have never done before. It looks good and increase of final grade.
  30 extra credit points
2 My advisor I was doing research with suggested that I present.
3 My professor, Dr. Grineski asked me to present and I agreed because I felt that it would be a great opportunity to share my writing with others and take part in a campus/community event. It is also a great way to practice public speaking skills and teach others about my topic.
4 We were asked as part of a Research Applications class we have to take. And I wanted the experience of presenting.
5 Encouragement from Dr. Danielson, ability to gain further public speaking experience, ability to list presentation on my resume.
6 I enjoy presenting and the experience that they give me. I also wanted to try MSUM's conference once.
7 The encompassing, forceful pressure of Andrew Conteh.
8 My instructor Dr. Christopher Corley asked me to. i thought it was also a good idea
9 Resume addition
10 To gain experience in this type of formal setting and also to add to my resume for graduate school, future jobs, etc.
11 I am writing my senior project and need a kick in the ass.
12 As part of my major, I took a Research Applications class. This was my first experience is learning the process of doing a research study. After a semester long research study, we presented our projects to students and faculty in our major. I guess the main reason why i am presenting is because I am proud of all the work I put into it and want to share it with others.
13 i was doing research with my advisor and felt i had enough data to present at the conference. frankly, it is another line on my resume.
14 Suggestion of advisor
15 It was in the back of my mind as something to do, but it became required in one of my classes, so I was more or less forced into the situation.
16 It was recommended by my research advisor
17 Looks good on resume, good practice for other conferances and a chance to get to show others what I do and how I accomplish it.
18 As a member of the MSUM Forensics Team, I was asked to present one of my pieces at the conference and I agreed
19 How PE affects RhoA Cascade of Phosphorylations The role of NHE in cells How pH affects cells
21 Our forensics coach asked us if we would like to present our speeches at the Conference. We agreed that it would be a good idea. I think presenting at the conference will allow other people on campus to see the speech that I have worked on all year and have presented in competition.
22 Senior Project Experience Practice for future presentations
23 My advisor asked if I would. I also thought that it would be a good resume builder.
24 I would like to go on to graduate school to study music therapy and I knew that if I participated in the student academic conference presenting my findings on my personal study into music therapy that I may have a better chance in getting into a good school.
25 Too much info for a poster
26 The professor that I am doing research with strongly recommended that we give a group presentation. I agreed because it sounded interesting.
28 my professor suggested it and said it was a nice addition to grad school applications and resumes
29 Good to have on a Resume Encouraged by Professor to participate
30 Resume Opportunity to include on Masters Program application Need practice Hope to master in speech communication
31 I had to write this paper for one of my history courses, and the professor said that it should be our goal to get our paper into the SAC and so I wrote it with hopes that he would suggest that I do the SAC. So when it came time to decide, my prof said that I should submit it to the SAC.
32 It is required for Biotechniques II.
33 I like to be involved with the other kids and see all of their research.
34 I had been asked to do it for the last two years, and this year I decided to do it.
35 It seemed like a good opportunity to practice public presentation, especially since I plan on attending graduate school. I was also encouraged by former presenters.
36 An instructor was offering extra credit in her class to anyone that presented at the Student Academic Conference.
37 teacher recommended the conference as a resume builder and to enhance our grade for the class
38 I wanted to do a poster for the academic conference, so I decided to do a presentation on Safe Zone training since this is something that I have a great interest in. I talked to one of my professors to see if he would work with me on this and he agreed to do this.
39 It makes me proud to show off my hard work and research that I am doing to add to the scientific community
40 I have always had an interest in presenting at the conference just for the professional experience, but this year my advisor Dr. Conteh and Ryan Sylvester both encouraged me to present. I am writing this paper for one of my classes with Dr. Conteh and he thought that it would be a good topic to present.
41 I feel it is a timely topic of interest to students and faculty. Presenting at a conference such as this should be a good experience to have, especially considering the field I am entering. I considered it an honor when Dr. Ginther suggested Deborah Erickson and I consider presenting at the Student Academic Conference. I figure it will look good on my resume when I am applying for employment.
42 Interest in bettering my speaking abilities.
