the New York University Hiking Club... where
fitness and pleasure walk hand in hand.
Fitness walking is one of the ideal forms of exercise, enabling the walker
to tone muscles, burn calories, reduce stress, increase energy, improve
their overall quality of life, and enjoy doing it. Our club offers a non-competitive
social activity that is versatile enough to accommodate all ages and fitness
levels.
The Hiking Club holds six to eight outings a year with most walks averaging
two hours plus travel time. We go to parks, preserves, and beaches where
city-bound members can have a healthy workout while exploring refreshing
natural environments and the occasional cityscape. Members are also encouraged
to participate in charity walks during the year, and to hone their skills
using the gym’s fitness equipment.
The club attracts students, faculty, and alumni, with an international
mix joining native New Yorkers to provide a lively forum for the exchange
of ideas and information about our city and our destinations–the
history, geological features, flora and fauna–as well as cultural
traditions. It offers an ideal opportunity for students from outside New
York to discover some of the natural resources available to them, from
Bear Mountain and Jones Beach to Central and Prospect Parks to the Brooklyn
Bridge.
