Welcome to the Acoustic Phonetics and Perception Lab

The Acoustic Phonetics and Perception Lab conducts research on language processing in adults and children. In particular, we focus on acoustic analyses of spoken language production and the perception of different acoustic dimensions of the speech signal. Our primary interest in the domain of speech perception is the relationship between the talker dimension (who is talking) and how it can either help or hinder linguistic perception. We are particularly interested in this interaction for individuals who have difficulty accessing the linguistic information in the speech signal, as we expect that tapping into the talker dimension could improve linguistic processing.

We are currently recruiting two groups of children: Children with a diagnosis of specific language disorder (SLI) who are between 8 and 9 years old and children with typical language development who are between 6 and 9 years old. Children who participate in this study will complete a set of listening tasks on a computer where they listen words and decide if the words are spoken by the same person or by two different people. In addition to the listening portion, children will complete several memory games and language tests. Children who participate receive prizes throughout the study. If you are interested in participating, please contact us.
